Our goals for this focused workshop are to discuss human microbiome research in a global health context, and to form and strengthen research ties between Cornell and international scientists to propel research at this intersection. We also aim to do this while providing a unique learning environment in which participants can learn from each other.
Topic-specific sessions will allow Cornell presenters & international participants to share their research and will include ample time for brainstorming and discussion. Participants will also learn about technological and engineering tools in microbiome research, and bioinformatics approaches for data analysis. Panel discussions will center around the challenges of international collaborations, ethical issues, and ideas to build a global microbiome consortium. Finally, the schedule weaves in opportunities to network and socialize.

Microbiome Research is Going Global
Join us for an engaging meeting on how microbiome research and therapeutics can address global health issues. Researchers from all over the world will come to Ithaca to discuss these topics and build strong long-lasting partnerships.
Workshop
Invitation only
Monday to Thursday, August 6th-9th, 2018
The workshop will consist of a combination of talks, discussions, panels, and hands-on learning. We will focus on the intersection between human microbiome research and global health issues including infectious diseases, noncommunicable diseases, antibiotic resistance, nutrition, and food security. We will also discuss techniques to study the microbiome, cost-effective practices, and bioinformatics tools. Finally, panel discussions will focus on establishing international collaborations, funding mechanisms, ethical challenges, and the establishment of a global consortium. There will be plenty of opportunities to socialize and network including a local hike to one of the local gorges.
Symposium
Open to the public
Friday, August 10th, 2018
The symposium is open to the public and will highlight cutting-edge research being conducted at the intersection of microbiome science and global health. Participants will present posters featuring their latest research.
